Welcome to Let’s Play Plaza.
A collection of events presented by Christopher Houghton-Budd to accompany and contextualise his Creative Folkestone Triennial 2021 artwork, Forgiving Light.
Seen from the point of view of an economist-artist-disruptor and based at the Urban Room / One The Plaza, Let’s Play Plaza explores previous and current iterations of my contribution to Folkestone’s regeneration story.
Let’s Play Plaza takes its cue from the signs on the outskirts of Folkestone that indicate a ‘town centre’, though where the town’s centre is (or should be) is uncertain. Originally, it was at the point (close by today’s bus stops) where what is now the Old High Street crossed the Pent River on a bridge to the fishing village, an area that then became a maze of streets buzzing with activity of all kinds.
But that was then; what about tomorrow? This is the question asked by the artwork, Forgiving Light, commissioned by Creative Folkestone Triennial 2021 – a circle of 12 lightposts placed in the centre of the area I call the Plaza.
